4100 Shovel Boom

A recent project has involved the application of composite on the boom of a 4100 electric rope shovel. at the shape transition where repetitive fatigue cracks have occurred on the bottom flange and outside web. Reinforcements have been installed both externally and inside the boom, as illustrated below.

Additional reinforcements were installed on the internal bulkheads to reinforce the corners of the access manholes. These reinforcements treated both faces and the edges of the manholes, balancing and maximising the structural benefit.
